Pipe and Drum the Beat

I am happy to announce FF Andy Olivarez, P16-C as the new Pipe Major for the El Paso Firefighters Pipes and Drums. Additionally, FST Derrick Olsen, Q31-B, will take over the role as the band’s Pipe Sergeant. We felt that it would be good to turn over leadership of the pipes and drums to those not so close to retirement and to gain the benefit of Andy and Derrick’s dedication and perspective.  I will continue to take an active part as a member of the band.

As the pipe major, Andy will have leadership of the band, deciding on music scores, leading performances,  and acting as band liaison with the department. Derrick will assist Andy by taking the lead of instruction of the piping section and taking over in his absence. Isaac Ceniceros, R25, will continue as the band’s Drum Sergeant and lead of the drum section. All three of these men are founding members of the band, active since May 2015.

The titles of Pipe Major, Pipe Sergeant, and Drum Sergeant are a tradition going back to the British military pipe and drum regiments, and are common in U.S. fire department bands. These positions are functional for band operation only, and are an appointment independent of department rank.

I know that these men are up to the task leading the band in honoring our fallen, promoting the traditions of the fire service, and providing service the El Paso community.
